For over a millennium, the area known as Encino was the home of a giant California live oak known as the Encino Oak Tree. It is possible that Encino is named because of this tree. It was known for both its size and longevity. The tree died on February 7, 1998 after an El Niño Storm caused it to fall. Today there is a monument to the great tree at the corner of Ventura Boulevard and Louise Avenue where the Encino Oak once stood. Encino is home to L.A.'s largest Earth Day festival, held annually at Woodley Park. The festival is called WorldFest and is a solar-powered celebration of music, the environment, animals and humanity. The combination of great music, empowering speakers, environmental, humanitarian and animal welfare non-profits, kids' activities and a delicious food court make for an earth-friendly experience that is sure to be inspiring and enjoyable for all. Woodley Park has barbecue pits, a bicycle path, a cascade, a children's play area, a fly fishing area, a jogging path, a lake for fishing (Balboa Lake), a launch ramp, pedal boats, picnic pavilions and picnic tables, private boating, and a remote control boating cove.
